The first photograph is from 1957 when the civic center was under construction (appears to be mostly foundation work?). But the second photo is clearly NOT from the 1950’s judging by the more modern cars in the shot. Which building is framed in steel? Is that the Civic Center building? It looks more like the L.A. Times Building? No. Then we would see the original Times building on the same lot. Any thoughts?

Steven, we do not have much information on the structure that is being constructed in the 1st image (some sort of large government building demolished because ‘earthquake damage’ I’m sure). The 2nd image is a shot taken by myself only a few weeks ago of the new Federal Courthouse.

Thank you for the reply. Back in the nineties, I worked briefly (’97-’99) in downtown in the Fine Arts Building on Seventh. I really loved the neighborhood and frequently would take lunchtime walks over to Broadway and check out the older buildings. I understand many of these structures have been renovated into artist lofts, eateries, etc. I’m overdue for a visit to the ‘old’ neighborhood.

The Fine Arts Building is really beautiful and still in great condition. There are still some areas suffering from lack of activity and could use a good cleaning and revitalization, but the neighborhood still has so much character. Saturdays are a great day to stroll down Broadway since it’s full of life with shops and restaurants!

The building under construction is the a State Office Building, shut and letter torn down after the earthquake. A seriously ugly, cheap piece of junk.
